A successful formula!
A well-written text deserves a translation that’s equally well crafted: not only does a translation need to be factually accurate and grammatically correct, it also needs to contain the right terminology, speak to the relevant audience, be clear to understand and appeal to the reader. Depending on the specific text in question, there may also be certain conventions to consider – not to mention possible legal provisions. Simply “replacing” the words just won’t do.
A good translation is a bit like carbon: only under the right conditions will it produce a diamond!
When it comes to translation, being able to speak both languages is just one small part of the equation – just as important are a thorough, in-depth knowledge of the subject-matter and the ability to know when to ask questions or do more research. So, it’s no surprise that research, information acquisition and processing competence are core skills expressly mentioned in ISO 17100 – the international standard that sets out requirements for translation services.
When it comes to accuracy, readability and style, always entrust your written content with a translator who really knows her subject and is able to express scientific concepts clearly – even complex ones. Only then will your translation be up to the job: whether it’s a safety data sheet that’s fit for purpose, a patent specification that accurately reflects your invention or a scientific paper that draws the reader in.
